Doctor Tapanya received his PhD in psychology from the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He had worked as clinical psychologist at the Somdet Chaopraya Psychiatric Institute in Bangkok between 1972 and 1984, and had been assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University.
Ajarn Sombat
Dr. Tapanya’s research interest is in the area of violence prevention in children and youths. He has conducted research projects on positive discipline and bullying prevention through a grant from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. In addition, he is also on a research team with Duke University on the effects of parenting behavior on children’s adjustment, with Temple University on adolescents’ decision-making, with University of Manitoba on positive discipline, and another research project on youth resilience with Dalhousie University in Canada.
During 2010-2013 he was coordinator for the Mekong Project on training psychiatrists and psychologists to provide treatment for traumatized patients in Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Burma with support from the German government.
As a psychotherapist Dr. Tapanya has been trained in Gestalt Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). He has been recently certified by EMDR Europe as trainer of EMDR and has been providing free treatment under the Mekong Project.
Dr. Tapanya has published many papers in both English and Thai journals and publications, and is a highly regarded conference presenter and speaker.
Dr. Tapanya also holds a 4th degree black belt in Aikido and trains children in the local communities in Chiang Mai. He is also trained in Thai traditional massage, as well as Swedish massage and has published several books on the subject.
Dr. Tapanya is highly regarded and his experience and passion and will be a huge asset to Lanna Rehab and improving our substance abuse and addiction recovery programs in Thailand.
