In Need of Treatment for Weed

In Need of Treatment for Weed

There are those who believe that marijuana isn’t addictive, at least, not in the way that on opioid is addictive.  It’s a mild drug for recreational use much like alcohol, even less toxic than alcohol. Nobody wakes up with a hangover from marijuana. You can’t overdose from marijuana, like harder drugs. Few people have gone to jail after robbing a convenience store to feed their marijuana addiction.

If we’re being honest, there are plenty of people who casually use marijuana and have no problem with it, just as there are millions of people who casually use alcohol and never become alcoholics. But the reality is marijuana contains a drug, it can be addictive and marijuana addiction treatment may be needed in some cases.

The truth is, marijuana isn’t what it used to be. These days most marijuana is laced with something much harsher. The weed itself is far more potent and the buzz is, as well. And, yes, you can become addicted to it. Especially people who have been smoking it daily for months and years. There are people who become so addicted to it that they cannot function any longer without it. They become anxious in the company of others. They can’t perform the simple routine responsibilities of everyday life – going to the store, working at a job. Young people, teenagers in particular, with developing brains, are at real risk of damage. We’ve encountered many young people who have abused marijuana for years and now have paranoia, anxiety, trouble holding jobs, completing simple tasks, memory issues and sometimes more complex mental health issues like schizophrenia. For young people weed is actually more harmful that people would think.

Someone having these types of issues definitely needs treatment for marijuana addiction.

But, the reality is for many people marijuana is used in tandem with other drugs. So, people seeking marijuana addiction help are actually seeking addiction treatment in general, or for multiple drugs.

How someone uses marijuana greatly impacts how to treat addiction to marijuana. The physical impact of prolonged use of marijuana may not be an issue as it is with other drugs such as methamphetamine or opioid based drugs. But the psychological impact can be equally as debilitating if someone has come to truly feel they can’t perform even small tasks without the use of the drug. There have been cases in which people who have abused marijuana daily for several years became agoraphobic, and would not leave the house. These cases are rare but exemplify the extent to which someone can become dependent on marijuana. There is often anxiety involved in treating this addiction, as well as sleeplessness, depression and other psychological symptoms.

All of this is that much more complicated when other drugs are included in the mix of abused substances.
